Magnificent John Ulrich Signed Factory Engraved and Big Game Gold Inlaid Winchester Model 1910 Self-Loading Rifle This Winchester Model 1910 S.L. rifle was manufactured circa 1911. The rifle is chambered for the 401 WSL cartridge and has a special order express rear sight with one fixed and three folding leaves marked: "1-4". A similar period Angelo Stokes engraved Winchester Model 1910 is pictured in "THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING" by R.L. Wilson on page 282 and also depicts a rare bull elephant frame scene. A similar Ulrich signed example is also pictured on page 170 of the same book with the special order express rear sight and bull elk. The engraving features a solid gold bengal tiger in a panel on the left side of the receiver, a solid gold Indian elephant in a panel on the right side of the receiver and a gold bull elk in an oval penal on the top of the receiver. The top and sides of the receiver are blued and engraved with arabesque scrollwork surrounding a relief carved leopard on the right side of the receiver and an antelope on the left side of the receiver. The game scenes and edges of the receiver are bordered with single and double line gold inlays. "401" is inlaid in gold on the bottom of the trigger guard surrounded by a double line gold border. The signature of master engraver John Ulrich is located behind the trigger guard. The arabesque engraving and gold inlays are continued on the blued forearm cap. The barrel is blued with open scroll engraving at the receiver and gold inlays at the muzzle and junction with the receiver. The stock and forearm are highly figured fancy grain walnut with a low-luster finish and intricate Winchester Style A relief carving. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap embossed: "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." The stock has a red hard rubber shotgun buttplate that may be a period replacement. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the Winchester legend, model designation and patent dates in three lines followed by ".401 CAL.". "-NICKEL STEEL BARREL-/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel below and behind the rear sight. The oval Winchester "W/P" proofmark is stamped on the top of the barrel and receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER/TRADE MARK/REG.U.S. PAT. OFF./MOD 1910 S.L." in four lines. The serial number, "8422", is stamped on the lower left side of the receiver and upper left side of the trigger group. The bottom of the detachable magazine is stamped: .401 CAL". Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1910 BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 401 SL Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 8422 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent. With the possible exception of the period replaced buttplate, the rifle is all original and retains 97% plus of the original blue/gold inlaid finish. The highly detailed gold tiger, elephant and elk and gold inlaid borders remain in perfect condition. The relief carved engraving and game animals are crisp. The elaborate, highly detailed relief carving on the stock and forearm is in perfect condition with sharp edges. The stock and forearm retain nearly all of the original oil finish. A few very insignificant storage marks are on the stock. This is a magnificent example of the finest factory engraving, gold inlays and stock carving available on Winchester rifles. This high level of decoration on a Model 1910 S.L. rifle is extremely rare and unique.
