CGC certified: Fine/VF (7.0). Off-white to white pages. Cover: Harvey Kurtzman. Art: Will Elder, Wally Wood & Harvey Kurtzman. 1st use of "Underground" in connection with comic books. GPAnalysis: A 7.0 sold for $179, May 2021.

"Comics Go Underground: In this remarkable photo, we see a comic-book publisher whose books have been banned from the newsstands, secretly peddling his comics on a busy street corner..." One of Kurtzman's best covers, anticipating the Underground ethos 14 years before Zap Comix #1 was released. Bill Gaines is caricatured on the cover, selling contraband comics to a kid with the furtive air of a dope dealer.

"It was a relatively short step from MAD to... the 'underground comix' created a decade later by a mad generation. In Dan O'Neill's Air Pirates Comics [sic] for instance, Disney characters were swept through the muck, fucking and cheating and swearing... while R. Crumb's Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural and other characters indulged in attitudes and acts that previously only existed in the nether regions of mainstream consciousness." — Tom Englehardt, The End of Victory Culture: Cold War America and the Disillusioning of a Generation. Basic: 1995, p. 139.
