LUIGI LUCIONI
Italian / American, 1900-1988

Etching
detailed etching depicting a full-crowned tree standing prominently in a rural landscape set against a backdrop of rolling hills and a distant mountain range. In the foreground, a flock of sheep grazes amid rocky, textured terrain, adding pastoral life to the composition. Pencil signed and dated lower right.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Luigi Lucioni (1900–1988) was an Italian-born American painter and printmaker who immigrated with his family from Malnate, Italy to the United States in 1911, eventually settling in Union City, New Jersey. He trained at Cooper Union and the National Academy of Design under William Auerbach-Levy, and a 1924 Tiffany Foundation fellowship allowed him to return to Italy, where his exposure to Renaissance masters left a lasting imprint on his precise, realist style. Renowned as a "super-realist" for his meticulously detailed still lifes, portraits, and Vermont landscapes, Lucioni achieved early acclaim when the Metropolitan Museum acquired his 1931 painting "Dahlias and Apples," and he went on to win first prize at the 1939 Carnegie International; he was also a distinguished etcher, producing over 75 plates published by Associated American Artists over five decades, and maintained studios in both Greenwich Village and Manchester, Vermont until his death in 1988.
  • Dimensions: 8.25" X 11.88"; frame: 16 x 17 inches
