LT. GEN. GEOFFREY KEYES' WARTIME 48-STAR AMERICAN FLAG
GEOFFREY KEYES (1888-1967) Highly decorated Lieutenant General who commanded the II Corps during World War II. Keyes was George Patton's invaluable chief of staff, leading Patton's I Corps in Morocco, and accepting the surrender of Palermo. An important Keyes relic, 68 x 52 48-star two-sided American flag with gold fringe and intended for use in office, a top-quality piece with individual stripes sewn together and embroidered stars. The flag bears a broad pole pocket with cloth Philadelphia Quartermaster Dept. label, dated March 23, 1942 and inspected by 'McAnally 533'. Some very trivial, tiny spots to a few white stripes, else fine. This is a typical general officer's office flag issued during World War II and predates his invasion with Patton of North Africa and very likely accompanied him through the war. Keyes generally commanded from the front, so this flag likely remained at central headquarters in North Africa, Sicily and central Italy while Keyes was at the front. SOLD WITH: five 5 x 3.75 in. original war-date, photographs, two marked 'SECRET', showing Keyes with various generals, etc. including MARK CLARK, LUCIAN TRUSCOTT, CHARLES BOLTE, WILLIAM LIVESAY, SIR HENRY FLOYD, ALFRED GRUENTHER, and others. Originates directly from Keyes' estate.
