East Asia, Japan, Meiji era, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A dazzling Kutani ware pottery bowl featuring the "Hundred Poets" pattern, hand-painted in delicate pastel tones against a lavish gilt ground. The bowl boasts a scalloped rim and showcases finely rendered scenes of courtly poets both within the basin and along the exterior walls. Inside a poem appears above the gathering of poetic figures. This motif draws inspiration from the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu," or "One Hundred Poems by One Hundred Poets," a classical anthology compiled in the 13th century. The level of detail is exceptional, with clothing and textiles accentuated by raised enamel stippling and intricate gold work. A two-character maker's mark is inscribed on the base. The rich use of gold throughout elevates this piece as a standout example of late Meiji artistry. Size: 6" Diameter x 2" H (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm)

Provenance: private Las Vegas, Nevada, USA collection, acquired May 16, 2021
