A handsome American mantel clock manufactured by the Waterbury Clock Company of Waterbury, Connecticut, retaining its original "Java Rich Gold" trade label to the reverse. Executed in the Classical Revival taste, the architectural case is finished in an ebonized surface and flanked by engaged fluted columns with richly gilt Corinthian capitals and bases, surmounted by a molded cornice above a stepped plinth. The circular enameled metal dial with Arabic numerals is enclosed beneath a glazed brass bezel and fitted with blued steel hands. The movement is a brass, spring-driven time-and-strike mechanism bearing the Waterbury Clock Co. mark and serial number, striking on a coiled gong. The reverse retains its original removable access panel and the surviving manufacturer's paper label identifying the model as the "Java Rich Gold." Produced during the early decades of the twentieth century, this model reflects the enduring popularity of neoclassical architectural forms in American decorative arts. Its restrained proportions and contrasting ebonized and gilt finish make it an attractive addition to collections of antique clocks, American decorative arts, or period interiors.

  • Provenance: Private Collection.
  • Literature: Comparable examples of the Waterbury Clock Company "Java Rich Gold" mantel clock are illustrated in reference works devoted to Waterbury Clock Company production and early twentieth-century American mantel clocks.
  • Circa: Early 20th century, circa 1905–1925.
  • Condition: Overall good antique condition consistent with age and use. Ebonized finish exhibits scattered surface scratches, abrasions, and edge wear. Gilt decoration with expected rubbing and minor losses. Original paper label to the reverse remains partially intact with wear and losses. Dial displays minor wear around the winding arbors. Brass bezel with light oxidation and age-related patina. The movement appears complete; however, the clock has not been professionally tested for long-term accuracy or striking function and is therefore offered as untested.
