JOHN DURAND (CONNECTICUT / NEW YORK / VIRGINIA, 1731-1802), ATTRIBUTED, PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN, oil on canvas, waist-length depiction of subject wearing blue coat with brass buttons, white silk vest, and white cravat, seated at a desk in a Chippendale-style chair while holding a letter in his left hand, no signature located. Housed in a modern frame, marked "ROBERT J. STONE GALLERY / RICHMOND, VIRGINIA". Circa 1770. 29 1/4" x 24" sight, 37" x 31 1/2" OA.
Literature: See MESDA Object database, Photo # S-5694 for a similar example that is attributed to Durand and depicts an identified Virginia sitter.
Catalogue Note: While little is known of his early life, John Durand (1731-1802) is believed to have been born in Connecticut. By 1767, he is recorded in New York City, where he advertised his services as a teacher of drawing and painting. In June of 1770, he is recorded in Virginia, where, over the ensuing decade, he would find numerous patrons for portraiture among the region's wealthy class.

    Property from the estate of Malcolm Bradley, Richmond, VA.

  • Condition:

    Good overall visual condition with moderate discoloration, some crazing and cracks to old wax lining, scattered moderate inpainting to figure's face, clothing, and hands, and to background, partially obscured under heavy varnish. Frame with minor wear.
