Herman Vandever (Navajo/Diné, 1937–2006) was a silversmith recognized for his sculptural approach to traditional Navajo metalwork. Born in Fruitland, New Mexico, he learned silversmithing from his father and developed a distinctive style inspired by forms found in nature.
Working primarily in sterling silver and gold, Vandever created jewelry featuring leaves, feathers, flowers, and other organic motifs rendered with remarkable depth and detail. His pieces frequently incorporated turquoise, coral, and precious gemstones, blending traditional materials with a contemporary aesthetic. By incorporating deeply carved natural forms, layered metalwork, and three-dimensional compositions, he expanded the visual vocabulary of Navajo jewelry and demonstrated how traditional silversmithing techniques could be adapted to increasingly sculptural designs. Vandever's work received numerous awards at major Native art exhibitions, including the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial and the Santa Fe Indian Market.
