RARE OLD TOWN CANOE CO. SALES SAMPLE CANOE MODEL
Old Town, Maine, Early 20th Century
Green-painted canvas over wood frame, with original "Old Town Canoe Co" lettering and the Old Town Canoe Co. manufacturing decal on both sides of hull. Complete with thwarts and woven cane bow and stern seats. Includes original "Sales Sample" label and a pair of miniature wooden paddles with painted decoration of the head of a Native American.

  • Provenance:
John Rinaldi Nautical Antiques, Kennebunkport, Maine.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
Old Town Canoe Company, incorporated in 1901 and still in business, is perhaps the most well-known American canoe maker.

Company records indicate they built about 110 of these model canoes, which were purportedly distributed as incentives to sporting goods wholesalers who purchased a railroad car full of full-size canoes. The models were exact replicas of the full-size canoes being built at the time and were intended to be used in store windows or displays.
  • Dimensions: Length 48".
  • Condition: Paddles not issued with the canoe and not to scale. Canoe with some scuffs, exposing the canvas in a few small areas, craquelure and other light wear.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
