ANTIQUARIAN HISTORY OF VIRGINIA FOUR-VOLUME SET, Volumes I-III: John Burk, The History of Virginia, From Its First Settlement to the Present Day. Petersburg, VA: Printed for the Author, by Dickson & Pescud, 1804, 1805; Volume 4: The History of Virginia; Commenced by John Burk, and Continued by Skelton Jones and Louis Hue Girardin. Petersburg, VA: Printed by M. W. Dunnavant, for the Proprietors, 1816. Complete with the fold-out table in Volume III. Custom rebound in full leather with spine labels at the Vintage Bindery of Williamsburg in 2006.
Literature: Church 1298; Eberstadt 131:686; Haynes 2499; Howes B971, "b"; Sabin 9273; Sowerby, Jefferson's Library 464.
Catalogue Note: An important history of Virginia, complete with the very rare fourth volume. The author was killed in a duel in 1808 before completing the last volume. Eight years later, Jones and Girardin, with some assistance from Thomas Jefferson, published Volume IV to continue Burk's work through the early years of the Revolution. This last volume is often lacking from sets, as most copies were lost in a fire, with only a small number surviving for distribution.
