BRITISH PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER, silk on linen, upper half with rows segmented by horizontal bands of decorative stitching, consisting of six alphabet rows with numerals at the end of the second and pictorial motifs at the end of the sixth, featuring a heart next to two birds under "P T" initials, signature in the seventh row that reads, "Elizabeth C Harwood was born 1817", all above a numeral row, lower half with pictorial motifs including two women in dresses and crowns above their heads flanking a vase holding various flowers, below with two stylized flower bands, all encompassed by a double border, edges with applied tape. Unframed. Circa 1825. 17 3/4" x 17 3/8" including applied tape.
Catalogue Note: The identity of the maker is uncertain, but one candidate is Elizabeth Harwood who was born in York, England on December 8, 1817 to parents John Harwood (1791-1848) and Mary Pearson (1790-1872). Her father was a chemist and druggist, and her mother continued his work after his death. Elizabeth had at least four siblings, and she never married. She continued to live in York with her mother and two of her sisters throughout her life. Elizabeth died on August 19, 1881.

  • Condition:

    Very good to excellent overall condition with light toning, some stains and spots including a large area along the proper left side, thread retains much of its color, a few holes along the edges of the linen with most or all being as-made from being on a stretcher, applied tape with a few tears and small holes.
