JOSEPH H. DAVIS
New Hampshire/Maine, 1811-1865
Portrait of a young Charles M. Tasker,

standing next to a Federal chair and offering a ball of yarn to his cat. Tasker is wearing a salmon red dress and a beaded choker, often worn by children in the 19th Century to ward off evil spirits and illness. Vibrantly patterned carpet as typical for the artist. Inscribed in the drapery swag below "Charles M. Tasker Painted May 21st AE 8 Months, 11 Days--May, 1836.". Housed in its original black-painted and gold-decorated frame with the original glass.

  • Provenance:
Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, November 14, 1994.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Illustrated:
Featured in a John Bihler and Henry Coger ad in the November 1971 issue of "Antiques".

    Notes:
Joseph H. Davis was an itinerant portraitist, most prolific between 1832 and 1837 when he is said to have painted about 150 small-scale watercolor likenesses, mostly residents of New Hampshire and Maine.

His typical portraits depict the subject in profile, often accompanied by a cat, set within an interior amidst their everyday belongings. The details of what surrounds them -- books, furnishings, newspapers, etc. -- often provide clues to their profession, political leanings, and levels of education and refinement.

While Davis's paintings give us a unique snapshot into the everyday lives of the comfortable New Englanders of the era, little is known about Davis's own life. He identified himself as a "left-handed painter" on one portrait, but because quills, paper and pots of ink figure prominently in so many of his works, some scholars hypothesize he may also have been a traveling calligraphy teacher. This is supported by the strong calligraphic line seen in his work and the particularly fine script used to record the subject names.

Davis is known to have painted at least four members of the Tasker family of New Hampshire: the Rev. Levi B. Tasker; his wife, Hannah; and their children, Charles M. and Lydia Ann.
  • Dimensions: Watercolor, 7" x 6.125". Framed 9" x 8".
  • Condition: Some foxing. Colors bright. Conservation by Sarah Dove, October 30, 1994.
