WALTHER PPK WITH THIRD REICH POLITICAL ISSUED GRIP
A very rare piece and seldomly found for sale, this Walther PPK pistol with a high-gloss blued finish issued in Cal. 7,65mm., with a seven round magazine. This gun was officially called the 'Ehrenwaffe fur politische Leiter der NSDAP' ('Honorary weapon for political leaders of the NSDAP'), or more commonly known as the 'Party Leader PPK'. This handgun by Carl Walther was primarily manufactured in the Zella Mehlis factory in 1938 and 1939 and served as a symbol of the Nazi Party's hierarchy. This special variant distinguished itself with brown mottled plastic grips prominently featuring the Third Reich national eagle and swastika. It is estimated that there were only 3,500 produced, a very low number in firearms terms, making it among the rarest Walther PPK variants. The political grip style, in one piece wrap around format, are checkered on all three sides, and show the NSDAP eagle holding a wreath-encircled swastika insignia cast on the top of both sides of the grip. It is thought that Hitler himself presented these guns to the party hierarchy, and these were only given to the most loyal political leaders. These special grips are usually found on guns within the serial number ranges of 174000-234965 and 850000-935000, with this particular gun falling just outside that usual range with Serial number: '925474' applied in a vertical serial number format on right side of the frame behind trigger assembly. Also appearing on the other side of this same one-piece frame is a number stamp of: '55', applied horizontally to the bottom of the grip part of the frame, with this number being hidden by the brown grips on the left side. There also appears inside the side wall of the frame, as was properly done at the factory during the initial production, the last three digits of this number scratched into the finish: '474'. Left side of slide is engraved with the 'Walther Banner' followed by 'Waffenfabrik Walther, Zella-Mehlis (Thur.), sitting above 'Walther's Patent Cal 7,65 m/m' and then 'Mod PPK'. The gun is fitted with a 90 degree safety lever. Finished in a High polish blue, nitro proofed with three 'crown over N' proofs, one on the barrel tip hidden, one on the right outside of fame, and one on the sliding breechblock. Very fine overall with 90% plus of the original blued finish intact, showing a little edge wear in places. The grip is excellent, showing only one minor crack just above the left wing of the eagle on the right side of the grip, with no other cracks or chips, but a slight flaring to the leading edges of the grip, left and right. Magazine is fitted with the standard plastic finger extension that is period correct, but showing a small crack and a dent or two to the plastic. Magazine body shows a parkerized finish with a small spot of oxidation opposite the release notch, and is marked with the 'Walther banner logo' to the lower lefty side of the magazine. Excellent overall.
