Muybridge, Eadweard (1830-1904). A group of 4 stereoviews from The Modoc War, ca 1873.

Each, 178 x 89 mm. On cardstock mount with Bradley & Rulofson imprint and "Valley of the Yosemite" series title to recto. Some marginal dampstaining affecting images.

The Modoc War was an armed conflict between the Indigenous Modoc people and the United States Army which took place in northern California and southern Oregon from 1872-73 in response to the U.S. government's systematic genocide, in coordination with white settlers, of Indigenous peoples in California throughout the 19th century. The present images were photographed by Eadweard Muybridge during the early stages of the U.S. Army's campaign to quelch the rebellion. The Modoc leader Captain Jack became a sympathetic figure among the American people for his fight to retain his ancestral lands.
