JOHN R. JONES
(1827-1901) Confederate brigadier general, commanded a brigade under ‘Stonewall' Jackson during the Battle of Harpers Ferry and on the first Confederate line of defense at Antietam, where he was wounded. He returned to his command in time for the Battle of Fredericksburg, after which he was charged with cowardice, acquitted, but had the same charges levied against him after Chancellorsville. He was captured at Smithsburg in July of 1863 and held prisoner for the remainder of the war. Fine content A.L.S. as prisoner of war, 1p. 4to., Camp Chase, OH, Feb. 26 [n.y., likely 1865], to his cousin Olivia. In part: ‘I have received yours & Flories very welcome letter… also the bottle of syrup for which I am very much obliged… I am getting quite well since I heard of an exchange, your syrup did me a great deal of good, but did not last long for there was so many suffering in this miserable place that I had to divide it. I have signed the Parole and expect to be sent away in 10 days or two weeks, you cannot imagine how much better I feel since I have a hope of getting out of prison. I hope I will be able to here [sic] from you again before I leave and often after I leave. I will try to write again… I would write much oftener but am not allowed to write but once a week… I heard from Fath[er], the other day, he thinks he will become rich from the oil wells. Will may make a good deal of monie [sic] , but it is not a time for that…' He signs ‘John Jones' in black ink at the conclusion. The letter is faint overall but still legible, and shows original mailing folds, with an approx. half-inch loss to the right edge where an individual's name has been removed. Otherwise in very good overall condition.
