PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE FORUM ROMANUM WITH THE TEMPLE OF SATURN; DOMENICO ANDERSON, ALBUMEN PRINT

Large-format panoramic albumen photograph by Domenico Anderson captures a sweeping view of the Roman Forum, with the eight surviving Corinthian columns of the Temple of Saturn dominating the middle ground and the Arch of Septimius Severus visible to the left alongside the church of Santi Luca e Martina and its distinctive dome. The photograph extends the full length of the Via Sacra toward the Colosseum in the distance, scattered architectural fragments, and surrounding 19th-century cityscape of Rome. Likely produced in 1887, the image is characteristic of Anderson's celebrated large-scale panoramic views of Roman antiquities, prized in the 19th century by Grand Tour travelers and collectors of classical architecture. Rendered in warm sepia tones typical of the albumen process. Framed. Not examined out of frame.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Domenico Anderson (1854-1938) was an Italian photographer based in Rome, the son of the pioneering British-born photographer James Anderson (1813-1877), whose celebrated studio and archive of Roman views he inherited and continued to develop. Building on his father's foundational work documenting the classical antiquities, architecture, and art of Rome, Domenico expanded the family's photographic enterprise, becoming particularly renowned for his large-format panoramic views of monumental Roman ruins, church interiors, and religious art. His photographs, prized for their technical precision and compositional grandeur, served as important visual records for scholars, architects, and Grand Tour travelers of the era, and were widely distributed as part of the flourishing 19th-century market for Italian topographical and archaeological photography. Following his death in 1938, Anderson's extensive photographic archive was acquired by the Fratelli Alinari of Florence, one of the world's oldest photographic firms, ensuring the preservation of his and his father's combined body of work.
  • Dimensions: 21 x 47 inches; frame: 29.5 x 55 inches
