America, Circa 1840
Obverse depicts the armed brig under sail, flying a large American flag from the gaff and a banner from the peak of the mainmast. Band of striped stylized water and "U.S.B. Spark" below. Reverse depicts the allegorical figure of Hope leaning against an anchor, holding her left hand to her face and a kerchief in her right hand. Rock-like base and "Hope" below.

    Notes:
    The "Spark" was built in Sag Harbor, New York for U.S. Navy service in the War of 1812 but was completed after the war ended. Instead she sailed for the Mediterranean on May 20, 1815 as part of Commodore Stephen Decatur's squadron against the pirates of Algiers during the Barbary Wars. After two voyages in support of that action she was assigned to suppress pirates in the Caribbean, successfully capturing several vessels and their crew. The 310-ton "Spark" was 103 feet in length and just over 24 feet in beam and was armed with two long 18-pound guns and ten 18-pound carronades. She was sold in New York City in 1826.

  • Condition: Few small scratches/discoloration around "HOPE", on one edge and near tip. Typical age lines near tip.
