Joe Brown
(American, 1909-1985)
Runner
bronze with brown patina
incised Joe Brown (atop figure's back left leg)
Height: 9 1/2 inches.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.

  • Provenance: Private Collection, Philadelphia
    Sold: Freeman's, Philadelphia, June 26, 2005, Lot 50
The Collection of Sidney Rothberg, Philadelphia, acquired from the above sale
    Sold: Freeman's, Philadelphia, June 24, 2025, Lot 137
Acquired from the above sale by the present owner
  • Condition: Overall (without base): 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 x 6 1/4 inches.
    Overall (with base): 11 1/4 x 13 3/4 x 7 1/4 inches.

Appears to be in overall very good condition, with accumulated dust and grime in the nooks and crevices of the work, consistent with age and wear. With nice greenish, verdigris highlights in parts of the bronze (noticeably the figure's back). Slight rubbing and abrasions on the figure's inner right thigh, due to the leg occasionally knocking against the top of the hurdle. The hurdle itself is slightly oxidized. The runner is itself bolted into the plexiglass through a rod that allows the figure to slightly pivot forward and backward. With green felt on the underside. Please request additional images.
