SILK NEEDLEWORK PICTURE "INNOCENCE"
Hartford, Connecticut, Circa 1800
Wrought by Christian W. Salter of the Lydia Bull Royce School. Depicts two girls and a lamb under the shade of a tree in a bucolic classical landscape. Charmingly and finely detailed, with one girl's flower-covered straw hat resting on the ground beside her, a horse-drawn carriage approaching the stable in the middle distance, waves spilling over the watermill on the far right, and the rooftops of a village peaking out over the trees in the far distance. Worked in vibrantly colored threads, silk and velvet on watercolored silk, with superbly painted detailing to the faces of both girls and the pink-tinged sky background. Housed in a giltwood frame with a black eglmoise mat with gilt "Christian W. Salter.", "Innocence" and corner flourishes.

  • Provenance:
Marguerite Riordan, Stonington, Connecticut, March 17, 1987.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Reference:
Another example wrought by Christian Williams Salter is illustrated in Girlhood Embroidery: American Samplers & Pictorial Needlework 1650-1850, Vol. I by Betty Ring (N.Y.: Alfred A Knopf, 1993), p. 213, fig. 248.

    Notes:
According to Ring, Christian Williams Salter (1790-1856) was a daughter of John Salter (1769-1831) and Mary Williams (1769-1850) of Tolland, Connecticut. She was named for her grandmother and died unmarried.
