NEW ENGLAND CHIPPENDALE INLAID CHERRY TALL CASE CLOCK, eight-day brass weight-driven movement, iron false plate stamped for an English manufacturer, painted sheet-iron dial with a ship painted in a reserve at the top of the arch, the hood with a stepped broken arch pediment with unusual rosette carvings flanking a projecting shaped ornament at the center, the tympanum with paint decoration featuring two cherubs, trailing vines, and a central rosette over thin colonnettes with inlaid vertical bands simulating fluting, the case with a thin central door flanked by fluted corner columns, the base with a central fielded panel flanked by inlaid chamfered corners, the whole resting on a replaced base with an applied carved molding. A large number of the surfaces are decorated with a barberpole inlay or stringing forming panels. Retains the likely original weights, pendulum, winding key, and door key with functional lock and an old, probably original, finished surface. A note inside the door (with a later typed copy) by Mrs. Nicholas Starr wrongly attributes the clock as having been brought over from England by the Cook family. Late 18th/early 19th century. 97 1/4" HOA, 20 3/4" WOA, 11" DOA.

  • Condition:

Good overall condition with typical minor to moderate wear, losses to inlay and wear to the high points and corners; the base with a loss to the applied carved molding on one end; back replaced, at least partially (per the note on the door) with shrinkage cracking rendering it fairly loose; base replaced. Untested and in unknown working condition (See Catalogue Guarantee).
