Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 19th century CE. A finely cast brass figure of the Hindu deity Kubera, also revered in Buddhist contexts as Yellow Jambhala, the god of wealth and prosperity. The deity is shown seated in dhyanasana (lotus position), his corpulent belly emphasized as a symbol of abundance and prosperity. With a calm, meditative expression, he holds in his right hand a jewel representing inexhaustible wealth, while in his left he clasps a mongoose, the mythic creature that spews forth treasures and precious gems, a classic attribute of Jambhala imagery. The deity wears a crown centered by a lotus flower, a symbol of purity and spiritual enlightenment rising from the mud of worldly existence. His adornments include elaborate earrings, necklaces, and armbands, reflecting his role as a celestial sovereign. The casting is detailed and smooth, the surface polished to a warm dark patina that enhances the figure's sculptural presence. Size: 3" L x 4.5" W x 7" H (7.6 cm x 11.4 cm x 17.8 cm)

Kubera/Jambhala occupies a unique position within Tibetan Buddhism and Hinduism alike. In Hindu tradition, Kubera is the guardian of the north and king of the yakshas, spirits associated with fertility and riches. In Vajrayana Buddhism, Jambhala is worshipped as a protector deity who bestows material security and removes poverty, often invoked in rituals to ensure prosperity. This dual significance made images such as this one especially important in Himalayan devotional practice, bridging cultural and religious traditions across South Asia.
