CHARLES BALTHAZAR SAINT-MEMIN (FRENCH/AMERICAN, 1770-1852) MINIATURE PORTRAIT OF JAMES BROWN, SR. (1762-1841) OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, engraving on paper, a profile depiction inscribed "James Brown. Sen. Esq." Housed in a later frame with a Richmond, VA framer's label verso. Early 19th century. 3 1/4" SQ sight, 6" SQ OA.
Literature: Miles - Saint-Memin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America, p. 255, fig. 93.
Catalogue Note: James Brown (Scottish/American, 1770-1852) came to Richmond, VA in 1785 as an agent of London merchants, Donald & Burton. In 1797, he formed Brown & Burton with Robert Burton (1747-1806). After Burton's death Brown remarried his widow, Anna Pitfield (Braddock/Braddick) Burton, and became a member of the firm Brown, Rives & Co. which would become one of the foremost commission houses in Virginia.
Several miniature portraits in this sale depict members of the same family which descended together through the Burton/George family of Richmond: lot 2365 the portrait of Anna Burton, lot 2367 the portrait of Major Byrd George, and lot 2366 the Lawrence Sully portrait of a semi-nude woman.

  • Provenance:

Descended through the Burton / George family of Richmond, VA. Probably from Anna Burton George (1808-1855) to her daughter Ellen Burton George Boykin (1845-1915) to her daughters (presumably "The Misses Boykin" as referenced by the VMFA exhibition catalogue).

  • Condition:

Good overall condition with typical moderate foxing and minor toning; frame with minor surface wear and lifting/discoloration to the eglomise; the backing paper with rips and losses. Not examined out of frame.
