LORD DUNMORE (C.1730-1809) SIGNED 1773 AMHERST CO., VIRGINIA LAND GRANT DOCUMENT, printed and manuscript on paper, granting 115 acres of land in Amherst Co., Virginia to Neil Campbell. Signed by Governor John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore. Dated March 1, 1773. 12 1/2" x 13 object, 22" x 28" OA.
Catalogue Note: Lord Dunmore was a British Army officer, colonial administrator, and last royal Governor of Virginia (1771-1776). While governor, he directed a series of campaigns against the trans-Appalachian Native American tribes of the Shawnee and Mingo (known as Lord Dunmore's War). He fled New York after the burning of Norfolk in 1776 and returned to Britain. (2) His birthdate is not known exactly, but estimated to be around 1730.

  • Provenance:

    From the Richard and Catherine Hubbard collection, Cape Charles/Williamsburg, VA.

  • Condition:

    Paper is in very good condition with one horizontal fold and three vertical folds, foxing and discoloration throughout, with three large dark stains on the right side, quite wrinkled around the folds, and the ink has faded but is still very legible.
