Magnificent Rene DeWil Signed, Factory Engraved, and Game Scene Relief Gold Inlaid Belgian Browning Exhibition Grade Superposed Shotgun Two Barrel Set with Case Legendary American gunsmith John Moses Browning's designs have withstood the test of time, with the Winchester Model 94 now in production for over 130 years and Browning’s machine guns which have served the United States military in numerous capacities for over a century. Browning's prolific career came to an end with his death in 1926 but not before he had designed what many would call the ultimate in over/under shotguns, the Browning Superposed. Though he passed on one century ago, Browning's legacy lives on in the Browning Arms Company, which still supplies America's sportsmen for all manner of outdoor pursuits. Originally release to the public in 1931, a few years after his death, the Superposed maintains a strong following to this day amongst hunters and clay shooters alike and remains a staple of American gun collecting. No collection of fine American sporting arms is complete without a quality Superposed, and one need look no further than this exceptional example. This Superposed was built in 1967 as an Exhibition Grade gun showing off the immense skill of the era's craftsmen creating a timeless work of firearms artwork. The gun is fitted with blued Special Steel barrels featuring a white bead sight on the matted flat vent rib, contrasting filled factory markings, chokes marked modified/full, and chambers marked 2 3/4 inches with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to the blued action which displays stunning relief gold inlaid scrollwork terminating in bestial heads at the apexes and surrounding floral vine engraving on the fences and four game scenes. The scenes depict a pair of fighting black grouse cocks on the left, a calling black grouse cock on both the trigger guard and the underside of the action, and another pair of fighting black grouse cocks on the right side, all rendered in highly detailed semi-relief gold inlay. The gun is signed at the low rear of both sides of the action "RDEWIL" for highly regarded FN engraver Rene DeWil. The gun features a single gold trigger and a tang mounted manual safety selector with gold inlaid "S", "O", and "U" indicators. The gun is fitted with a splendidly well-figured forend and short tang round pistol grip stock with large panel checkering, beautifully executed scroll carving, blued and gold inlaid forend iron and release, and a Browning buttplate. Includes an extra matching numbered, engraved, and gold inlaid 26 1/2 inch barrel set with chokes marked skeet/skeet as well as a Browning Airways Naugahyde takedown case that houses the entire set. Barrel measurements for the 26 1/2 inch set (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .723/.724 inches; choke constriction .006/.006 inches; minimum wall thickness .034/.035 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for the 30 inch set (U/O): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .726/.727 inches; choke constriction .020/.039 inches; minimum wall thickness .034/.031 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs. 7 oz.
