Desirable U.S. Navy Colt Model 1851 Navy Richards-Mason Conversion Revolver This revolver was originally manufactured as a percussion revolver in 1858 under contract for the U.S. Navy and then was converted and refurbished by Colt for the Navy in the 1870s. These remained in use until they were finally replaced by the Colt Model 1889 Navy double action revolvers near the end of the century. With such a long service life, often on vessels out at sea, it is astounding any survive in this high of condition. The barrel is marked with the one-line New York address and has had the loading lever removed and the holes partially plugged and an ejector rod with housing added to the right. The underside of the barrel has "R.W.M. anchor." U.S. Navy Commander Richard W. Meade markings, and "U.S.N." is stamped on the butt. The naval battle scene is roll engraved on the cylinder which is numbered "330". "PAT.JULY. 25, 1871./PAT.JULY. 2, 1872." is marked on the left of the frame partially over the original "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." markings. Matching serial numbers are visible on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap, and "9474" is also marked in black inside the rear mortise of the grip. The wedge is unnumbered.

  • Condition: Fine with 60% of the case colors remaining, 40% blue finish remaining on the barrel and cylinder, smooth brown patina on the balance, scattered scratches and dings, minor oxidation, crisp markings, and a distinct cylinder scene. The grip is also fine and has rather minor lower edge wear, small dings and scratches, and light handling wear. Mechanically functions. Overall, a very attractive U.S. Navy Colt Model 1851 Richards-Mason revolver that would make a fine addition to any Colt or U.S. military arms collection.
