Factory Engraved Stephen Grant Hammer Double Rifle with Cripple Stock Attributed to the 9th Duke of Leeds Completed c. 1879 according to Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London". Built with brown Damascus steel barrels featuring a low blade fore sight of ivory or bone and a V-notch rear sight on the hand filed flat solid rib which is marked "STEPHEN GRANT 67A St. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON.", period London proof marks, and chambers with extractor. The barrels are fitted to the casehardened backaction with Jones Underlever which displays classic tight English scroll engraving surrounding "STEPHEN GRANT LONDON" on either side of the action bar and "STEPHEN GRANT" on either lockplate. The rifle features non-rebounding hammers with bar safeties and double triggers. The rifle is fitted with a nicely figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and release as well as a richly figured pistol grip cripple, or crossover, stock allowing a right handed shooter to shoot with his left eye. The stock features the same checkering , a sling stud, a silver stock oval bearing a ducal coronet, and a checkered steel buttplate marked for a 40 grain charge of No. 6 powder. The coronet on the stock is believed to be that of George Osborne, 9th Duke of Leeds. Length of pull 14 1/16 inches. Weight 8 lbs. 9 oz.

  • Condition: Very good overall, retaining 70%original brown finish with strong Damascus patterns, 25% plus original vibrant case colors in the protected areas of the action, some oxidation, mild wear, a crack at the lower right stock finger, and overall mostly crisp checkering on the wood. Mechanically functions.
