Southeast Asia, Thailand, Ban Chiang, ca. 3600–1000 BCE. A large early period pedestal vessel constructed in two sections, a rounded open-mouthed container set into a broad-footed base, with a prominent flange at the join concealing the seam between the two components. The entire surface is covered in incised and impressed curvilinear decoration, the exuberant swirling motifs characteristic of the earliest Ban Chiang ceramic tradition. The deep gray color results from wood-firing followed by oxygen reduction as the fire died down. Size: 7.75" D x 6.25" H (19.7 cm D x 15.9 cm H).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA Collection; ex-private Denver, Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Flushing, New York and Ridgeway, Colorado, USA collection
