STIREWALT FAMILY, ATTRIBUTED, NEW MARKET, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED YELLOW PINE BLANKET CHEST, the hinged lid with applied edge molding over a dovetailed case with applied base molding, interior with lidded till, all raised on turned feet mortised through the underside of the bottom board, retaining a mid 20th century Luray, Virginia printed shipping label to back and original polychrome surface featuring stenciled leaf devices flanking a stylized urn against a green / blue ground. Circa 1850. 18 1/2" H, 40 1/2" W, 14" D.
Literature: See Moore and Goodman - "The Stirewalt Group: Painted Boxes and Miniature Chests from Shenandoah Co., Virginia", The Magazine Antiques, September 2007, pp. 76-83 for a discussion of this distinctive regional group.
Catalogue Note: Recently discovered, the present blanket chest shares a number of construction and design features with the highly-desirable Stirewalt Family-attributed group of boxes likely produced in New Market, Virginia in the second quarter of the 19th century. As is typically the case with the Stirewalt examples, the present chest is constructed of yellow pine, bears undersized hinges (in this case iron), employs a stenciled decorative scheme, and rests on ring-turned feet mortised through the underside of the case. The present chest does, however, exhibit stenciled devices that are slightly different from those used on recorded Stirewalt examples, and may represent an entirely new hand (or sets of hands) working in the same style and likely in the same area of the Shenandoah Valley. Research is ongoing.

  • Condition:
