A finely decorated Japanese Arita porcelain charger, executed in underglaze cobalt blue and featuring an elegant asymmetrical composition of blooming chrysanthemums, flowering branches, and a perched songbird. The detailed botanical decoration displays the refined naturalism and balanced composition characteristic of late Edo to Meiji period export wares, with varying shades of cobalt creating depth and visual interest throughout the design. The broad ivory-white porcelain body is framed by a subtly molded brown-glazed rim, enhancing the decorative presentation. Measuring approximately 15 3/4 inches in diameter, the charger is ideally suited for wall display or cabinet presentation. The reverse is decorated with traditional blue border motifs and retains an old retailer's label reading "Dahrego Japan," along with an inventory label. A later wire hanger has been fitted for display. Large decorative chargers of this quality were produced by the celebrated kilns of Arita, Japan's foremost porcelain-producing region since the early 17th century. Their richly painted floral compositions and exceptional craftsmanship made them highly desirable among Western collectors during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and they remain sought-after examples of Japanese decorative arts. An attractive example of traditional Arita blue and white porcelain, combining bold scale with refined hand-painted decoration.

  • Condition: Overall good display condition. One drilled hole through the body near the central bamboo branch, likely added historically for hanging or mounting. Later wire wall hanger attached to the reverse. Minor surface wear, scattered glaze imperfections, firing anomalies, and light age-related wear consistent with use. No obvious large cracks or major restorations observed from the photographs. Examination under UV light and in-hand inspection recommended.
