[African-Americana] Colin, Paul. Le Tumulte noir

(Paris: Henri Chachoin, Editions d'Art Succes, 1927). First edition, one of 500 portfolios printed on velin paper. Partial set of 32 (of 44) lithographs with color pochoir, on 16 double-sided sheets, each 18 5/8 x 12 5/8 in. (473 x 321 mm). With letterpress half-title; facsimile of hand-written preface by Josephine Baker; one (of two) lithographic calligrams; limitation leaf on two-pages; printed biographical leaf. Scattered light foxing; some top margins creased with small closed tears; many plates with later small pencil notation "Posters Please Oct 1984" at bottom right; lacking original hand-painted folder.

Rare and sizable group of double-sided lithographs depicting African American dancers from the Harlem Jazz Age, by French artist Paul Colin (1892-1985).

Colin's inspiration for Le Tumulte noir largely came from the 1925 debut performance of Josephine Baker (1906-75) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris. Her dancing, especially her signature "Charleston", caused a sensational wave of popularity in African American culture and jazz dancing throughout France. Paying tribute to Baker and many other Black performers in Paris during the 1920s, Colin painted created his images directly on stone, and hand-colored them using painstaking technique known as pochoir.
