A set of four sterling silver butter knives in the Louis XV pattern by the Whiting Manufacturing Company. This collection consists of one larger master butter knife and three individual flat-handle butter spreaders. The pieces are designed in the Rococo Revival style, featuring deeply embossed scrollwork, foliate motifs, and a shell-form terminal. The reverse of each handle is stamped with the Whiting Manufacturing Company maker mark consisting of a griffin over a stylized letter W. Each piece is also marked STERLING, indicating .925 fine silver, and PAT. 1891, denoting the design patent year. The number 28 is stamped on the reverse of the blades. The master butter knife features an engraved script monogram on the front of the handle terminal, while the individual spreaders are unmonogrammed.
