Central Asia, Tibet., ca. 1800 - 1899 CE. A remarkable sterling silver double dorje (vajra) inlaid with precious turquoise and coral, representing indestructibility and spiritual power within tantric Buddhist tradition. The form is composed of four outward-curving prongs at each end converging toward a central shaft, with surfaces adorned with applied petal elements, wirework, and beaded detailing. The central spherical knop symbolizes the unity of wisdom and compassion, expressing the ideal of enlightenment and the balance between material and spiritual realms. Traditionally used in ritual practice alongside the bell (ghanta), the dorje embodies the masculine principle of method or action in complement to the bell's feminine aspect of wisdom. The high silver content, combined with carefully set turquoise and coral and detailed metalwork, reflects a level of material richness and craftsmanship associated with objects made for significant ritual use or elite patronage. Size: 9.25" L x 3.5" W (23.5 cm x 8.9 cm); silver quality: 93 to 95%; weight: 398.9 grams

Provenance: Ex-private collection of Samuel Saunders, Nogales, AZ, 2000's, partner of Holler & Saunders, Ltd., founded in 1979 and widely regarded as one of the preeminent authorities in Spanish Colonial and Mexican folk art.
