[Presidential] Roosevelt, Theodore. Autograph Note, signed

No place, ca. March 18, 1891 or later. One sheet, 9 x 5 3/4 in (229 x 146 mm). Autograph note, signed by Theodore Roosevelt, in the top margin of a letter sent to him by Henry J. Budd. Budd's letter reads in part: "Are you a relation or descendant of Nicholas J. Roosevelt...If not can you give me any idea of his descendants, I find I hold some...lands in connection with his heirs...if you can enlighten me you will much oblige..." Roosevelt writes at the top margin, "Dear Uncle Jim, will it bother you to write to this gentleman, if you can give him the information? We enjoyed seeing Alfred and Katy. They were but the forerunners of a shoal of Roosevelts, Leila and Merritt lunch here today, West arrives to stay with us this afternoon..." Docketing on verso. Creasing from old folds; scattered light foxing.

Future President Theodore Roosevelt pens a friendly short note to his uncle James A. Roosevelt (1825-97), asking him to respond to a genealogical question. Nicholas J. Roosevelt (1767-1854), a distant cousin of Theodore's, was a New York inventor, and colleague of Robert Fulton's who contributed to the early designs of the steam boat.
This lot is located in Philadelphia.
