A British Druid: William Stukeley, Engraving from Stonehenge

Detailed 18th-century engraving, titled "A British Druid," depicts a robed and hooded druidic figure standing beneath an oak tree, staff in hand, sandaled feet planted upon rocky terrain with rolling hills in the background. Designed by the antiquarian William Stukeley (inscribed "Stukeley delignavit") and engraved by G. Vandergucht ("G. V. Gucht Sculpsit"), the plate is dated in the lower left "Chyndonax Druid 4 Feb 1723/4" and is numbered "Pl. TAB I" at upper right, identifying it as the frontispiece plate from Stukeley's seminal antiquarian work on Stonehenge, published in 1740. Framed. Not examined out of frame.

  • Dimensions: Sight (as matted): 12 x 8 inches; frame: 23 x 18 inches
