Taino Large Turtle Bowl with Snake Surrounding the Rim. Such receptacles were likely used to contain a hallucinogen like cohoba. The two figures, the turtle and the snake, could relate to the two Taino creation myths. In one myth, the turtle was considered the birth mother, with mankind erupting from a gash in her back. In the other, the Taino emerged from a serpent’s mouth, a metaphor for a cave. The turtle’s head is well defined, with bulging eyes, a finely structured nose, and a broad mouth. The turtle’s flippers are all represented as humanoid. The front and back legs each become outward-facing full-figured humans. On the turtle’s belly, the segmented plastrons are represented as dual owl faces located at the top and bottom of the shell. The snake follows the design ethics of Taino craftsmen. These include alternating triangulate symbols divided by a central line running the length of the serpent’s body. Length: 14 inches. The stone is a fine-grained siliceous hard stone. Taino Culture c. 600-1500AD. Dominica Republic. Purchased form the Phoenix Gallery NYC to a private Chicago collection.
