BRITISH ATTRIBUTED SILK-EMBROIDERED PRINTWORK NEEDLEWORK PICTURE, silk and pencil on silk with linen backing, depicting a park scene featuring figures of gentlemen and ladies, including a woman holding a parasol next to a dog in the center, chairs scatter along the grass with two being used in the group lounging around the cluster of tall trees, the background with ducks and/or swans in a pond in front of a landscape with figures, buildings, and trees throughout it, above with a cluster of clouds and birds flying in the distance, lower edge signed "Isabella Lacoste 1789" and "[F]ecit" in the lower right. Unframed, currently mounted to fabric on a mat and covered by a protective mesh netting. Dated 1789. 16 1/2" x 14 1/4" OA.
Catalogue Note: Possibly identified as Isabella Lacoste (La Coste), who was born around 1779. Not much is currently known about her, except she married James Nicholson Frood on April 14, 1800 at St. Andrew's, Holborn, Middlesex, England. Their marriage bond recorded Isabelle as "of the Parish of Saint James Westminster aged upwards of Twenty One Years and a Spinster". The couple had at least one son, Charles Edward James Frood, who was born on January 18, 1801 and baptized nearly a month later on February 24th at Saint Mary, Islington.

    Deaccessioned by the Valentine Museum, Richmond, VA to benefit collections care, preservation, and future acquisitions.

  • Condition:

    Thread in excellent visual condition with some possible losses, silk ground in poor to fair overall condition with toning and stains, scattered tears, holes, and losses, linen with deterioration / losses and holes from old tacks along edges. Not examined without netting.
