JOHN E. WOOL
(1784 - 1869) Union major general who fought off the Confederates at Fort Monroe and occupied Norfolk. Good association A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Troy, NY, Feb. [n.d.], 1853, to President Franklin Pierce. Wool provides a letter of recommendation for a William L. Avery, for the position of Navy Agent in New York, in part: ‘He is known to you, and therefore it is scarcely necessary to say that he is a gentleman of talents, high merit, a zealous and active democrat, and worthy of your confidence and patronage…' He signs in black ink at the conclusion. Shows original mailing folds, very faintly toned at the top edge, otherwise in very good to fine overall condition. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Wool, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
