Very Fine Factory Engraved Boss & Co. 12 Bore Best Quality Jones Underlever Double Rifle with Case Completed circa 1869 according to page 235 of Donald Dallas' "Boss & Co.: Builders of Best Guns Only". Built with browned Damascus steel barrels with a beaded blade fore sight and four-leaf (one standing, three folding) rear sight with platinum center lines on the matted flat solid rib which is marked "BOSS & Co. 73 St. JAMES'S STREET. LONDON." in a banner, band of engraving at the breech, front sling stud, and period London proof marks. The rifle appears to be chambered for 2 1/2 inch shells. The barrels are fitted to the casehardened Jones underlever back-action which display extensive near full coverage traditional tight English scroll engraving which surrounds "BOSS & Co." signatures on either lockplate and then continues onto the underlever, the semi-bestial hammers, the trigger guard, and both tangs. The rifle features double triggers, non-rebounding hammers, and bar safeties on either lockplate. The rifle is fitted with a nicely figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved casehardened iron and wedge fastener escutcheon as well as a straight grip stock with distinctive extended grip lower tang found on Boss rifles of the era, blank stock oval, rear sling stud, and a lightly engraved checkered steel buttplate. Includes a brass cornered hardwood takedown case with Boss trade label containing bullet molds, cleaning tools, and loading tools. Length of pull 14 3/8 inches. Weight 10 lbs. 6 oz.

  • Condition: Very fine, retaining 80% original brown finish on the barrels with attractive Damascus patterns, 60% original case colors which are vibrant in the protected areas, some wear, chipping on the forend wedge, and some minor oxidation. The wood is fine with dings and scratches and a few flat spots in the otherwise mostly crisp checkering. Mechanically functions. The case is very good with some wear. This is a fantastic chance to own a classic big bore British double rifle!
