Property of a California Collector
This lot is located in Chicago.

  • Provenance: Sold: Bonhams Los Angeles, June 25-26, 2018, Lot 378 (as English School, 19th Century, titled A Portrait of Mary Queen of Scots)
Acquired from the above sale by the present owner

    Lot Note:
The present lot is derived from the Carleton portrait at Chatsworth, previously thought to be by Federico Zuccaro and known through many engravings, including George Vertue's portrait from 1725 (see: NPG D10546).
  • Condition: Framed: 29 3/4 x 26 1/4 x 1 3/4 in.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is relined; network of faint, stable craquelures throughout; two thin white lines in the upper right and left corners of the background, which appear to be associated with inpainting; areas of inpainting scattered throughout the background, particularly a large area in the upper left corner, as well as horizontal lines along the lower edge, visible under strong light; under a thick, discolored varnish. Under UV light: the aforementioned areas of inpainting fluoresce, as well as additional large areas in all other corners; area of inpainting extending through the center left of the background, as well as other smaller areas of inpainting in the background; inpainting to the left eye of the subject, two areas of inpainting to her chin and neck, as well as a few other smaller strokes in the upper forehead and to the left of the nose; the thick varnish prohibits viewing of any additional restoration work. Additional images available upon request.
