Two hardcover reference works concerning the history and collection of wax portraiture. The first volume is Portrait Waxes: An Introduction for Collectors by D. R. Reilly, published by B. T. Batsford Ltd, London, in 1953. This quarto volume is bound in publisher navy blue cloth and retains the original turquoise dust jacket featuring a profile portrait on the front cover. It is illustrated throughout with black and white plates of wax models from various periods and artists, such as N. Gatteaux and L. M. Petit. The title page confirms the author as D. R. Reilly and the publisher as B. T. Batsford Ltd. The second volume is American Wax Portraits by Ethel Stanwood Bolton, published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston and New York, in 1929. This octavo volume is bound in red cloth with a gold gilt-stamped silhouette on the front board and is housed in the publisher original black cardboard slipcase with a printed paper title label. The work provides a history of wax modeling in the United States and includes illustrations of notable figures, including George Washington by Joseph Wright and Mary Miller Quincy by Robert Ball Hughes. It was printed at The Riverside Press, Cambridge.
