Philadelphia: Printed for W. W. Woodward, Brown & Merritt Printers, 1810. Each with a bookplate for the Parrish Library, Prot. Episcopal Church, Grand Gulf, Mississippi, on the front pastedown. Catalogue Note: Commodore Richard Dale (1756-1826) was born in Portsmouth parish, Norfolk Co., VA, the eldest son of Winfield Dale, shipwright and merchant, and Ann Suterland. He went to sea at the age of twelve, gained command of a ship at the age of eighteen, and joined the navy of the colony of Virginia as a lieutenant before the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Dale's record during the War was eclectic and storied. He served on many different ships, was injured and captured six times, escaped once by joining the British navy and then defecting, served under John Barry and John Paul Jones, and was involved in many engagements, including the September 23, 1779 battle between the USS Bonhomme Richard and the HMS Serapis off the coast of Flamborough Head, near Yorkshire, England where he was described as being somewhat reckless in his bravery.
After the War, Dale became one of the six original commodores of the permanent United States Navy and commanded a blockade of Tripoli in 1801 during the First Barbary War of Thomas Jefferson's presidency. He was also admitted to the Society of the Cincinnati by George Washington in 1785. Later in life, Dale served as president of the Marine Bible Association of the City of Philadelphia and was a co-founder of the Mariners' Church, located just off the city's docks, one of the largest churches in the city at that time.
