Lot Essay
"Adoration du Dieu Vodou" depicts a Vodou ceremony in which a Priest (Houngan) invokes specific spirits or Loas to possess the Faithful. These Loas can be identified by their attributes or the symbolic designs (Veve) used to invoke them. In this painting the Loas depicted are the Serpent Gods Damballah-Wedo and his consort Aida-Wedo, Erzulie whose Veve is shown on the Assator drum and Ogu-Bagadri, whose Veve is also shown and whose role as the God of war is represented by the sabres carried by two of the Faithful.
