(5TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLS.) GEORGE W. NASON
Private George Warren Nason (1834–1913) was a soldier in Company I of the 5th Massachusetts Infantry (also known as the 5th Massachusetts Militia Regiment). He was one of the 'Minute Men of '61' that responded to Lincoln's first call for troops on April 15, 1861 and was wounded and captured at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861, when he was shot in the left leg and took a sabre cut through his cap. Despite his wounds, he escaped in the night and rejoined his regiment. He would be wounded twice more during the war. Rare signed book: 'History and Complete Roster of the Massachusetts Regiments Minute Men of '61' by George W. Nason (Boston: Smith & McCance), 1910. 412pp. 8vo. in blue cloth with gilt titles, spine ends worn and corners slightly bumped, else very good. Nason inscribes and signs the book beneath his frontis portrait, April 26, 19188. This book is a detailed account of the Massachusetts volunteers who defended the Union, including personal sketches and portraits. The 5th Massachusetts Militia served three terms (90-day, 9-month, and 100-day), notably fighting in the First Battle of Bull Run and guarding fortifications around Baltimore. This book is regarded as a primary source for identifying Massachusetts soldiers from the early part of the war.
