FEDERAL BIRD'S-EYE MAPLE SEWING BOX WITH PAINTED DECORATION
New England, probably Massachusetts, Early 19th Century
Box possibly made at the Seymour workshop in Boston and decorated by Mary Jane Appleton of Boston. Hinged lid depicts a seated woman holding a fan surrounded by a garland of flowers, leaves and blue bows. Lid's lip with a coordinating ivy vine, interrupted by "Mary J Appleton." in Gothic lettering at the rear of the box. Each of the box's eight side panels with a different musical instrument and floral motif, most incorporating sheet music with infinitesimal notes and clefs. Lid interior lined with a watercolor painting on paper depicting a pastoral view, probably of the school in Keene, New Hampshire that Appleton attended. Fitted with multiple compartments lined in a pink paper. Contents include two small boxes, a miniature copy of the American Tract Society book Dew-Drops with presentation inscription, and a short letter of provenance indicating the box was decorated in 1822 by Appleton, who was then 16. Fine, untouched original condition.
