HENRY LEE III (1756-1818) SIGNED 1793 HARRISON CO., (NOW WEST) VIRGINIA LAND GRANT DOCUMENT, printed and manuscript on paper, granting 340 acres of land in Harrison Co., Virginia to David Casto dated October 11, 1783. Signed by Governor Henry Lee III with full papered seal applied to lower left corner, dated April 12, 1793. Professionally matted. Dated 1783 and 1793. 14" x 12" object, 22" x 28" OA. 
Catalogue Note: (1) Henry Lee III, nicknamed Light Horse Harry, was an acclaimed cavalry officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He received a gold medal for his brilliant maneuvers at the Battle of Paulus Hook in New Jersey on August 19, 1779. He served as the ninth governor of Virginia from 1791 to 1794. Lee was the father of Confederate general Robert E. Lee. (2) Harrison Co. was one of the fifty counties that seceded from the state of Virginia and joined the Union as West Virginia on June 20, 1863.

    From the Richard and Catherine Hubbard collection, Cape Charles/Williamsburg, VA.

  • Condition:

    Paper is in good condition with three horizontal folds and one center vertical fold; there are three small holes along the center fold line; there is discoloration and some staining on the piece around the fold lines and the edges.
