Small Hammer Poll Belt Axe Belt axes aka hatchets were vital tools on American frontier in the 18th and 19th centuries and are found in a wide variety of designs, typically smaller and lighter than the larger axes used in settled areas. Hammer poles were particularly useful and could be used for driving stakes or nails while building shelter or for crushing bone. This small axe has a head length of just 4 5/8 inches from the small hammer poll to the edge of the blade and an overall length from the top of the head to the end of handle of 13 1/4 inches. There are no markings.
