The consignor's family are direct relatives of the artist. This is the first time the painting has ever been offered on the market.

    Notes:
John Ross Key, known for his grand views of the American landscape, lived and worked in California from 1870 to 1873, maintaining a studio in San Francisco.

As a child Key lived in Washington, D.C. with his famous grandfather, Francis Scott Key, author of "The Star Spangled Banner". He showed an early proficiency in drawing, which led to a job in the early 1850s as a draftsman and map maker for the U.S. Coast Survey, and at the end of the decade as a cartographer for the Lander Expedition in Nevada and Wyoming.

In 1863, Key was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Confederate Corps of Engineers at Charleston, where he made maps of the strategic harbor and painted scenes of the siege of Fort Sumter.

After his stint in California he studied in Europe, then in major cities on the East Coast and in the Midwest, with an notable stop in Boston.
