NEAL DOW
(1804-1897) Union brigadier general twice wounded during the assault on Port Hudson, he was captured and confined at Libby Prison until exchanged for Rooney Lee. Later ran for president with the Prohibition Party. Interesting content, war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [place uncl.], April 30, 1863, to a Capt. W. Hoffman, in full: ‘I have the honor to acknowledge the rect. Of your note in relation to the accidental death of two of the men of the 165th N. Y. Vols. I have to say that the report of the Board of Inquiry into the circumstances of the death of him who was killed by a fragment of a shell from the U. S. Ship Portsmouth was forwarded to Head Quarters, but there was no formal inquiry into the particular circumstances of the death of him who was killed by the accidental falling of a stack of arms. If the General should think it best, it is not too late to institute such an inquiry now.' Dow signs in full at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig. Gen. Commandg.' Shows original mailing folds, slightly ragged at the left edge where detached from another leaf and with cello tape marks thereto, and faintly toned at the edges, otherwise in very good to fine condition overall. Sold with a period engraving of Dow, with his facsimile signature beneath the portrait.
