[Natural History] Audubon, John James. Group of 2 Prints

Canadian Titmouse
London: R(obert). Havell, 1834. Hand-colored engraving with aquatint and etching. Engraved, printed, and colored by Havell, after a painting by Audubon. A few minor spots. Approximately 28 x 19 in. (711 x 483 mm) (sight). In mat and unexamined out of frame. Low, p. 120, Variant 1

A handsome example of Audubon's depiction of a Canadian Titmouse, plate CXCIV from his Birds of America (London, 1827-38). "Painting and plate depict two adult birds, with a young one at bottom. All are on a branch of Black Chokeberry. Audubon wrote on the painting: 'Labrador, July 20, 1833, opposite Island by Macatina.' Audubon first called this little bird Canada or Canadian Titmouse, but later changed it to Hudson's Bay Titmouse. Succeeding ornithologists called it Hudsonian Chickadee and, later, Brown-Capped Chickadee." (Low)
