SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL BUTTERNUT / WHITE WALNUT BLOCK-FRONT CHILD'S CHEST OF DRAWERS, the rectangular top with a flat front profile and beveled end profile over four dovetailed full-length lipped drawers, each with the original brass knobs, lock, and inlaid modified-kite escutcheon, the whole of the front with a serpentine/block-front profile, flanked by solid ends with cut-out double-arch skirts, the front skirt with a serpentine profile conforming with the chest's front. Yellow pine and tulip/yellow poplar secondary woods. Two drawers have "1822" written/painted on the interior of the back board. Retains a later finished surface. Possibly Rockingham Co., VA. First quarter 19th century. 23" HOA, 23" WOA, 12 1/4" DOA.
Catalogue Note: Serpentine/block front furniture is extremely rare in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Several construction and design elements of this interesting little chest suggest it was built by a house joiner rather than a cabinetmaker. Foremost is the case's dado-and-rabbet joint construction. In addition, the drawer construction supports this theory, including its rather crude, oversized dovetails, the fronts being cut out of the solid, and the bottoms nailed directly to the sides and back.

  • Provenance:

Recently discovered in a Harrisonburg, VA estate.

  • Condition:

Excellent condition, being entirely original except for its surface.

Accepted Forms of Payment:

ACH, MasterCard, Money Order / Cashiers Check, Visa, Wire Transfer
